Send those in as well! Many photos that I will be posting will be from my own photography collection (unless it is not marked with my name.) I hope to see my love of Flagstaff spread across a wide variety of folks.
In early December Flagstaff got a light snow storm that provided a beautiful back drop the following day at Frances Short Pond. In a blanket of snow on a cloud covered morning the pond was very peaceful with only the noise of a nearby snow tractor and the sound of the pond’s year-round inhabitant ducks.

Hey Flagstaffians!

What is your favourite part about the snow?

Stop, don’t stop on Flickr.

New profile photo for the winter season

This photo was taken at work in Flagstaff in the winter of 2009. Anyone who was here then could tell you all about this infamous winter; the snowfall was tremendous. About 3 feet of those trees were covered. And people don’t think Arizona gets snow.

Perhaps I'm not cut out for blogging much.
by Ashley Barela

The Flagstaff Convention and Visitors Bureau will be putting on the Haunted Tours of Flagstaff, complementing the Halloween season and the haunted aspect of Flagstaff.

From Oct. 2 to Nov. 1 every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., with the exception of Halloween night at 5 p.m., tours will be given by Jim Hardy, administrative specialist at the Flagstaff Convention and Visitors Bureau. Although the tours are free, Hardy suggests people call and make reservations. The visitor centertries to limit the tours to 20 to 25 people each time.

“We meet at the visitor center and start at the train station,” Hardy said. “We move onto the Milligan House, to the Flagstaff Public Library, to the Theatrikos Playhouse, to the Orpheum Theater, to the Weatherford Hotel, ending with the Monte Vista Hotel.”

Each of these places has a different story and different spirits to offer.

“The Theatrikos Playhouse has three different ghosts,” Hardy said. “There is a man in the basement, a woman on the main floor, both who just hang around mostly, and an angry young man at the northeast corner.”

The second stop is the Milligan house, haunted by Mabel Milligan, daughter of James Milligan, who built the house.

“Mabel came home to take care of her parents and died in the house,” Hardy said.

Mabel is known as a helpful ghost. An employee at the visitor center lost track of time in the back office and heard footsteps coming from the hallway. She got up to see what it was, and when she returned to the office there was a picture of the train station on her keyboard: a reminder to get going.

The Orpheum Theater also contributes to Flagstaff’s eerie character.

“There is often a shadowy figure that goes through the balcony,” Hardy said. “People in the men’s room sometimes get an electric shock. Toilets start flushing and sinks go on by themselves.”

From what Hardy has read in books and seen on the Internet, more often than not people seem to go to the Weatherford Hotel or the Monte Vista Hotel to experience strange happenings.

General Manager Matt Bial of the Weatherford Hotel said the third floor is probably the most recognized for stories to occur in.

“On our third floor is our honeymoon couple,” Bial said. “It is said that the man was an outdoors man, went up to the San Francisco Peaks and froze to death. His wife thought he abandoned her, so she hung herself.”

The SciFi Channel and ghost chasers have come to the Weatherford to witness what is know to be the aged honeymooners still dressed in their wedding garb in the hallway.

Though there have been various stories of this couple, the third floor is notorious for spirits and strange occurrences.

In the basement of the Weatherford, there is a ghost named Noah.

“In the late ‘60s, early ‘70s, there was supposedly a homeless man who came down to the basement for warmth and froze to death,” Bial said. “People say they feel a presence, footprints in the dust, that sort of thing.”

Bial said the stories of the hotel attract many tourists and customers, but customer service is the hotel’s main goal.

“The history (of the place) is irreplaceable,” Bial said.

Matt Zaleta, general manager of the Monte Vista Hotel, said he has heard stories from people working at the front desk about televisions turning on, doors opening and some people have even experienced cold feelings throughout the lobby.

“Back in the ‘40s, two prostitutes were killed and thrown out the window of the third floor in Room 306,” Zaleta said.

Guests have claimed to have been awakened by strange feelings such as cold spots or a presence in the room and cannot get back to sleep. Male guests have claimed to feel as if they are being smothered — as if someone has a hand over their mouth.

Zaleta said the stories attract many people to stay and look around the hotel.

For further information about the tours, contact the Flagstaff Convention and Visitors Bureau at (928) 774-9541.
